Yu Lu, born in Chengdu in 1997, moved to Vancouver with family in 2000. She graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in interior design in 2019. Having resided in New York, Vancouver, Seoul, and Chengdu, Lu gained firsthand insights into the lifestyles and societal views shaped by various cultural backgrounds. Through her experiences in architectural and interior design over the past few years, Lu developed a thorough understanding of materiality and fabrication, which she has incorporated into her mixed media artistic practice since 2022.

Lu investigates societal diseases rooted within individuals, such as “the internalization of discipline” and “the regression of feelings,” using epidemiological research methods. The word “epidemiology” has its roots in “the study of what happens to a population.” In her practice, Lu attempts to elucidate the relevant causes, symptoms, complications, and treatments of these societal epidemics, particularly within the East Asian cultural context.
